Abstract

It is a whole of government effort to ensure there is sufficient blood supply during times of crisis and conflict. The interagency is responsible for the blood production, delivery and ultimately utilizes blood across the world to treat hemorrhaging patients. Blood is an individually donated resource that saves lives in the expeditionary environment. The ideal blood supply chain maximizes production, utilization, and remaining shelf life of blood products where it is needed across the world. Optimized production and delivery of blood maximizes lifesaving while minimizing wastage. The advancement in artificial intelligence represents an opportunity to apply technology to this critical supply chain. The paper discusses current blood delivery processes and opportunities to leverage AI to improve production, delivery, and reduce wastage.
